God didn’t write any gospels, nor did he leave any written records of his views on matters on which they are invoked. Like the US Constitution, it’s impossible to say what something in it means without taking the intentions of the framers into account. This is the work of legal scholars. Religion scholars have similar roles with respect to interpreting scripture. The pope is a religion scholar.

Leaders are very good at convincing the populace that a war is a just war, sanctified by whatever god they believe in, even when it is the same god on both sides.
